Poem of Flaws
I keep reminding myself of your flaws
As if reciting a poem.
To recall how you were the problem. And not me.
To remember how you were the reason it ended
Rather than my minds poison;
My limitations;
And lack of patience;
And frustration;
And after every verse
I can recall how my poisonous words bit into your skin;
I remember my insecurities pushing the two of us into a silent pit;
And it’s painful to see how such place brings me comfort
It’s saddening to see how the hope I felt yesterday
Has fallen into this dark cycle of self butchering.
I’m as much at fault as you my dear lover,
But my pride will keep reciting your poem of flaws
So I can stay in harmony with my solitude.
My body knows the exposure to warmth will lead to burning.
And what I hoped would be a gentle touch led to scarring.
So I’d rather keep all these clothes and layers to remain warm
Than risk being left naked and alone,
Exposed to the pain of what I hoped would be love.
